Duterte apologizes to South Korea over businessman’s kidnap-slay

President Rodrigo Duterte apologized to South Korean government over the kidnap-slay of businessman Jee Ick-joo last year, allegedly by officials of the Philippine National Police.

“I apologize for the death of your compatriot. We are sorry that it had to happen. But I can assure you, those responsible are known to us already and they will have to go to prison,” Duterte assured during the ceremonial switch-on of the Sarangani Energy Corporation Power Plant on Thursday, January 26.

In his apology, Duterte did not deny that members of the PNP were the ones behind the abduction of Jee from his home in Angeles City, Pampanga, and eventually his death inside Camp Crame last October 2016.

“T*** *** kayong pulis, bantay kayo. Hindi ko kayo papalusutin. You will suffer,” he warned, adding that he is even thinking of sending the heads of these policemen over to South Korea.

The kidnap-slay of Jee, allegedly initiated by SPO3 Ricky Sta. Isabel, SPO4 Roy Villegas, and Supt. Raphael Dumlao III, among others, sparked calls for PNP director general Ronald Dela Rosa to resign. But he got Duterte’s backing, who on Sunday said Dela Rosa has his complete trust and will stay in his position.

Malacañang earlier said in a statement that it is outraged over the incident and assured the public that there will be no whitewash or cover-up on the abduction and killing of Jee.

It also said, through Presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo, that the revival of the Mamasapano incident is not to divert the public’s attention from the kidnap-slay.

Panelo also said that the incident will not affect the credibility of Oplan Tokhang, the government’s anti-drug campaign.
